What is the Michigan Predictive Activity and Clinical Trajectories (MIPACT) Study?

The relationship between disease, daily quality of life, and healthcare services is not well understood in today’s research. The University of Michigan is conducting a study that hopes to improve what we know by collecting and evaluating data from:

  • Electronic health records (EHR)
  • Participant survey data
  • Genetic information
  • Blood pressure measurements
  • Apple Watch activity and clinical data

If you participate in the study, you will be asked to complete specific tasks such as wearing an Apple Watch, taking your blood pressure with a blood pressure monitor, as well as answering survey questions. The data collected from these devices, along with data about your health, can help us understand more about diseases and quality of life.

This study will not provide any treatment. It will collect information for research purposes. Apple Inc. is providing partial financial support and materials for the study. The University of Michigan and Apple are working together to conduct this study.

Significance of MIPACT

The Apple Watch can collect step count, heart rate, and other activity data that is often missing from your electronic health record (EHR). When this Apple Watch information is combined with other health data and genomic testing, researchers may see a more complete picture of your health.

The goals of the MIPACT Study are to:

  1. Advance scientific discoveries by providing researchers with a more complete database of participant health information.
  2. Advance the goals of Precision Health at the University of Michigan to develop more effective treatments to improve patient health and wellness.
  3. Lay the groundwork for unique, cross-disciplinary partnerships that help advance health research.

Those who choose to take part in the study will be making a valuable research contribution. This research may help improve health outcomes for millions of Americans.
