Study Team

  • Sachin Kheterpal, MD, MBA

    Dr. Kheterpal is Professor of Anesthesiology and Associate Dean for Research Information Technology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He received his bachelor’s, medical degree and master’s in business administration from the University of Michigan. Kheterpal’s career has been focused on the novel use of IT and electronic health records for patient care, quality improvement and research. He is recognized as a national leader in perioperative large dataset clinical research and has published numerous articles, editorials and book chapters regarding intraoperative management and long-term postoperative outcomes. Using innovative techniques to integrate administrative, EHR and registry data across institutions, he leads the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group, a research and quality improvement consortium of more than 50 anesthesiology and surgical departments integrating 10 million patient records.

  • Nirav Shah, MD

    Dr. Shah is Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan. His interests lie at the intersection of perioperative care and information technology. As Program Director for Anesthesiology Performance Improvement & Reporting Exchange (ASPIRE), his role is to lead collaborative quality improvement efforts across its 40+ member institutions, including 20 across the state of Michigan. ASPIRE focuses on practice variation among anesthesia providers, and developing tools to visualize performance across providers and hospitals. Within Michigan Medicine, he is the Associate Chief Medical Information Officer – Perioperative Care, and Director of Informatics and Systems Improvement, where he leads a team that develops clinical software and supports the hospital’s perioperative EHR. Dr. Shah’s health services research interests include using large clinical datasets to improve the perioperative quality and provider satisfaction, and using novel information technology solutions to track patient reported outcomes.

  • Brahmajee Nallamothu, MD

    Dr. Nallamothu is Professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan. Dr. Nallamothu’s research interests focus on improving quality of cardiovascular care and procedures. Most recently, his team has become interested in examining the application of new data science tools and methods to digital health information for clinical risk prediction. His papers have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, Circulation, EHJ, and JACC. He has received funding in the past from AHRQ, NIH, VA HSR&D and the BCBS Foundation of Michigan. He is Editor-in-Chief of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality & Outcomes, a leading cardiovascular outcomes research journal published by the American Heart Association.

  • Linda Terrell, MD

    Dr. Terrell is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine.  After completing medical school at University of Chicago and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, she joined the faculty in 1993.  She is a clinician who manages a large panel of complex internal medicine patients, has been involved in medical education throughout her career and in the past five years has served as the Medical Director at Briarwood Medical Group where she has focused on establishing and enhancing a team-based approach to patient care and panel management.  Her role in the MIPACT program has been to facilitate the connection between the research arm and the front line clinical world.

  • Yeong Kwok, MD

    Dr. Kwok received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, his medical degree at Harvard Medical School, and he did his internal medicine residency at U.C., San Francisco. After residency, he worked for a time on a Navajo reservation. Dr. Kwok enjoys running and traveling. He has a special clinical interest in the diagnosis and management of heart disease, but enjoys all aspects of adult medical practice. Dr. Kwok lives in Ann Arbor with his wife and children.

  • James Brian Byrd, MD

    Brian Byrd, MD, MS is an Assistant Professor in the Cardiovascular Medicine Division at the University of Michigan. Both in the clinic and in his laboratory, he focuses on high blood pressure, the leading risk factor for death and disability. Dr. Byrd’s research publications shed light on improved diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure using novel approaches. He is a recognized leader in hypertension research and serves as the Americas co-Editor for the Journal of Human Hypertension. He is a recipient of the National Institutes of Health Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award.

  • Caroline Richardson, MD

    Dr. Richardson completed her undergraduate training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, and earned her medical degree from the Harvard University Medical School. She completed her residency at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is board certified in family medicine. She is either teaching or doing research at the University of Michigan Medical School or at the VA Health Services, Center for Clinical Management Research. She studies the effects of physical activity on chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart failure, and is the director of the VA Diabetes Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI). Dr. Richardson is the medical director at Ypsilanti Health Center.

  • Laurie Buis, MD

    Dr. Buis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and the School of information. Her research interests focus on the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of mobile technologies for chronic disease self-management, with specific interest in clinical transformation of hypertension and diabetes care. Dr. Buis also works to understand how these technologies can be used to reduce health disparities in underserved communities. In addition to her research, Dr. Buis is a Section Editor for the Journal of Medical Internet Research, and an Associate Editor for Smart Health.

Project Team

  • Jessica Virzi, MSN, CSSBB

    Jessica Virzi is the MIPACT Project Director, and a Clinical Informaticist with Precision Health’s Health Implementation Workgroup. She is an accomplished clinical and research leadership professional with vast experience in improving strategic and operational initiatives, quality, informatics, clinical data analytics and lean project management methodologies in healthcare. Virzi is well known for leading various quality assurance and process improvement efforts, and implementing key strategic initiatives that cross multiple tiers of the health system.

  • Chelsea McKinney, MBA

    Chelsea is the Project Manager for the MIPACT study and is responsible for day to day operations and management of the project. Prior to joining the MIPACT team she worked in hospitality management and spent a summer as an Amazon Pathways Operations intern. She earned her BA in Music from Berklee College of Music, and her MBA from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at University of Michigan. Her graduate work focused on Business Administration, Operations, and Entrepreneurship, and her professional interests include project management, lean processing, and business logistics.

  • Nicole Pescatore, MPH

    Nicole Pescatore is a clinical research project manager for the MIPACT study, where she maintains oversight of recruitment and regulatory activities. Prior to joining the MIPACT team, she launched a multi-institutional study using mobile phone data streams and electronic clinical data to describe post-acute care experiences. Before moving to Michigan, she worked with the Emory University Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on clinical trials studying HIV transmission and treatment efficacy. Nicole received her BA in Spanish, BS in Biology, and MPH in Epidemiology at Emory University.

  • Janet Houghtby, MS; Manager, Cohort Development

    Janet Houghtby has been with the Department of Anesthesiology for nearly ten years.  Janet started her career in research with the Michigan Awareness Control Study. She then started and established the Michigan Genomics Initiative with the goal to complement a patient’s electronic medical record with their genetic data to lead to discoveries to improve patient treatments and therapies.  Janet currently is a Clinical Research Project Manager for the Michigan Predictive Activity & Clinical Trajectories study, which was built upon the experience she gained from 65,000+ patients enrolled in MGI.  She is responsible for the management of MIPACT study team and its study participants; as well as managing the subject incentives piece. Janet received her BA in Education from Western Michigan University and her MS in Education from the University of Michigan; she is also a Certified Clinical Research Professional.

  • Peter Bow

    Peter Bow is the Clinical Application Services Director for the Michigan Anesthesiology Informatics and Systems Improvement Exchange (MAISE) in the Department of Anesthesiology. As Director for the group, his role is to lead the implementation, maintenance and support of the electronic health record used by Anesthesia at Michigan Medicine, along with any data integration with MiChart or other ancillary systems. He is an essential member in implementing and maintaining the first system wide medical device integration with electronic health record (Centricity and MiChart). Additionally, he is a vital leader in navigating the group in the fast changing IT landscape and makes sure that standard practice is in compliance with the institution requirements or Standard Practice Guidelines (SPG). His other role is to help implement and shape the technical teams for a number of growing University of Michigan teams, such as: the Research Data Warehouse (RDW), MultiCenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) and the Precision Health initiative.

  • Jeremy Jared

    Jeremy Jared is a Database Administrator Lead for the Department of Anesthesiology.  He is currently serving as the Technical Lead for the MIPACT study project.  His primary focus is to oversee the software development, technical rollout,  and day to day operations of the MIPACT study.  He has over 20 years experience as a technical professional.  In addition to the MIPACT study, Jeremy is a one of the lead programmers involved in the Research Data Warehouse project.  He received his Bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University.

  • Michelle Acosta Bochinski, RN BSN MHI CNOR

    Michelle is the Clinical Data Quality Specialist from the Data Office for Clinical and Translational Research, a unit of the Office of Research. As a nurse with a Master’s in Health Informatics from the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health and School of Information, her skills and interests include bridging the clinical, technical, and research domains for improving health and healthcare delivery, as well as assisting with health data validation, integration, optimization, and resource innovations. Years of clinical knowledge and experience in healthcare system and hospital work flow operations, combined with technical expertise on Electronic Health Record system (EHR), Michelle is able to assist in the translation and facilitation of collaborative activities among various teams across Michigan Medicine and campus-wide research initiatives. In addition, she is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Nursing Practice with special focus on health systems and health populations on local, national, and global scale.
