The Precision Health leadership team is composed of U-M faculty experts who bring a variety of valuable perspectives and approaches to their roles.

  • Michael Boehnke, Ph.D., Co-Director School of Public Health

    Boehnke is the Richard G. Cornell Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics, Director of the University of Michigan Center for Statistical Genetics and Genome Science Training Program, a member of the National Academy of Medicine, and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Boehnke received an undergraduate degree in Mathematics from the University of Oregon and a PhD in Biomathematics from UCLA. He has been on the faculty at Michigan since 1984. His research focuses on problems of study design and statistical analysis of human genetic data, with an emphasis on development and application of statistical methods for human gene mapping. His  current focus is on disease and trait association studies based on genome sequence and genotype-array data. Boehnke has more than 340 refereed publications.

  • Eric Michielssen, Ph.D., Co-Director College of Engineering

    Michielssen is the Louise Ganiard Johnson Professor of Engineering and professor of electrical engineering and computer science in the University of Michigan College of Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1992 and joined the University of Michigan in 2005. Michielssen is also associate vice president for Advanced Research Computing within the university’s Office of Research, where he coordinates research initiatives in computational and data science across U-M’s 19 schools and colleges, and provides high-performance and big data computing and consulting services. Michielssen’s research interests include all aspects of theoretical and applied computational electromagnetics, as well as development of fast frequency and time-domain integral equation-based techniques for analyzing electromagnetic phenomena.

  • Sachin Kheterpal, M.D., M.B.A., Co-Director Medical School

    Kheterpal is associate professor of anesthesiology and associate dean for research information technology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He received his bachelor’s, medical degree and master’s in business administration from the University of Michigan. Kheterpal’s career has been focused on the novel use of IT and electronic health records for patient care, quality improvement and research. He is recognized as a national leader in perioperative large dataset clinical research and has published numerous articles, editorials and book chapters regarding intraoperative management and long-term postoperative outcomes. Using innovative techniques to integrate administrative, EHR and registry data across institutions, he leads the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group, a research and quality improvement consortium of more than 40 anesthesiology and surgical departments.
